Back in December, I ordered two Bigso graphic boxes from The Container Store when they were having a 20% sale on one item. I knew I wanted to create memory boxes for my kids, so it was the perfect time to pick up two for the project.
Well, they have been sitting in my son’s closet ever since that day. I knew I couldn’t start on them until I had his closet finished. One thing at a time, I have to keep telling myself. I got his closet finished two weeks ago, so it was time to get this project started and finished.
Let me just start by saying that this project was not as easy as I thought it was going to be. I had a nice pile of things in Kate and Derrick’s closets (see picture of Derrick’s below) that I was going to look at when putting the boxes together, but it took so much longer than I had anticipated.
I thought it was going to take about an hour or two and it ended up taking over a week. Seriously! At the end of the first day, I had a nice pile on my kitchen table.
Then, by the end of Day 3, it looked like this…
Once I got everything moved to a central location (my entryway), sorted through them and separated them into categories, I started filling the boxes.
Most of the items were placed in one gallon freezer bags and labeled with:
I feel the bags will keep the items clean and they also help with the labeling process.
Next, I wrote down what I placed in each box on a printable that I created.
first birthday party hat
first birthday banner
recordable books from me, her daddy, nana, and grandma
The last order of business was placing the boxes back in my kids’ closets.
I placed them both in Derrick’s closet for the moment because I need to do some Spring cleaning in Kate’s.
So, what took me so long? Well, a combination of things:
- Some of the items I thought were in the pile were not there. For example, my daughter’s first birthday party hat. I still didn’t find the hat, but I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will show up somewhere.
- Determining what to place in the box.
- Labeling everything.
Note: I did not place any baby books, photos, or photo albums in these boxes. All of those items are kept in our fire safe. I hope we never lose our house and contents to a fire or natural disaster, but if so, I want to make sure those things are salvaged. If I could, I would place all of these things in there, but it isn’t that big.
