Back at the beginning of my YouTube channel (in 2015), I did an entire series on the KonMari Method of organization. I covered my closet, accessories, kitchen, kids’ toys, books, and papers. When I did my closet video, I followed the book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo, but I tweaked it to fit my needs. Or, what I thought were my needs.
For example, when she states to organize your closet according to light clothes to heavier clothes that means DO NOT color-code. Well, I didn’t listen to her and I color-coded my closet because that is the way I had always done it and I thought it was working just fine for me. If it was working just fine, then I would not have referred to the book, huh? Stubborn me!
Well, at the beginning of August, I went through my closet to make sure that I didn’t have anything that I needed to get rid of before school started. After going through my closet, I eliminated nothing. Yes, nothing! I guess I felt like I had already gone through my closet before summer started, so why did I need to get rid of things now.
But, I walked out of my closet with an unsettling feeling. It honestly felt heavy, if that makes sense. I felt like I couldn’t breath and that things were crammed in there. It had gotten to where I didn’t like trying to find something in my closet. At that moment, I walked into my office and grabbed Marie Kondo’s book. I reread the clothing section, pulled everything out of my closet, and took everything she said to heart.
The only thing that I didn’t follow was the part where she says your clothes, “should rise to the right.” Meaning your heaviest clothes should be on the left and the lightest clothes should be on the right. My husband and I share a closet. He has the left side and I have the right side. If I had the left side of the closet that advice would be perfect. But, having the right side, I would prefer my heavy clothes to be next to the wall. So, when I walk in I directly see my lighter garments in the center.
I hope you enjoy this video. I can tell you my closet feels SO MUCH better now that I followed her advice fully.
