Today is Day 7 (the last day) of my Christmas series. In today’s video, I will be sharing my family’s Christmas traditions. If you missed my first 6 videos, make sure you check out the links below:
When I was asked to share my family’s Christmas traditions, I really had to stop and think about it. At first, I really didn’t think we had any. But, the more I thought, the more I realized we have quite a few traditions that we have created for our little family.
1. We purchase a new family ornament every year.
This started when my husband and I got married. We purchased our first Christmas ornament that year and we have purchased one every year since. My two favorite companies to purchase family ornaments from are Lisa Leonard and The Vintage Pearl.
2. Our kids have Christmas Elves (Holly and Buddy) that come and visit each holiday season.
This tradition started when my daughter turned 2. Her elf, Holly, arrived a couple of days after Thanksgiving. Then, when Derrick was born, Holly brought her brother, Buddy, with her. The kids get so excited when this time of year arrives. They love for Santa’s elves to visit. They leave when Santa drops off presents on Christmas Eve.
3. We adopt a Christmas Child at school.
The school district that we work for has a Christmas Child program at Christmas time. The students in our school district who will not be having a Christmas fill out a wish list, including necessities, and hand it into the school. The school asks for volunteers to purchase Christmas gifts for a child. We get assigned a child and their wish list is attached to the form we receive. We have participated in this program for 3 years now. Our family has been very blessed and we want to give back to those that are not as fortunate as us.
4. We put up our Christmas tree together as a family.
Every year, we will watch Christmas movies and decorate our tree as a family. This has been the first year that my son has been old enough to help with ornaments and get excited about decorating. He is 3-years-old. This is also how the kids tell their elves they are ready for them to visit. Once the tree goes up and their elf ornaments are on the tree, Holly and Buddy know we are ready for their visit.
5. Our kids always receive new Christmas Eve pajamas.
Their elves always leave them pajamas to wear on Christmas Eve night. It is usually the elves’ last order of business before Santa arrives.
6. We read Twas the Night Before Christmas and The Christmas Story as a family before bed on Christmas Eve night.
Without the television on or electronics, we all sit down on the couch together and read these books as a family. Both books were actually mine as a child, so I think it makes them even more special. We think our children need to remember the reason for the season, so The Christmas Story is a very important one for us to read.
7. We send out Christmas cards to family and friends.
This is something that my husband and I have done since 2006. We weren’t even married yet when we sent out our first Christmas card. I have saved one of every Christmas card since and created an album that we update every year.
8. We attend the Christmas Eve church service and then, go out to eat as a family.
When we lived in our home town, we always went to my aunt’s house for a small family get-together after church. Now that we do not live there, we had to make our own family tradition. So, we go to church and go out to eat together; just the 4 of us.
9. We leave milk and cookies for Santa.
I like to make homemade cookies for Santa, but sometimes, I just don’t have enough time to get those made. But, whether they are homemade or not, Santa always has cookies and milk waiting on him at our house.
10. My husband stays up on Christmas Eve night and wraps all of my presents.
He has done this since before we were even married. I never have a present under the tree until Christmas morning. It has become a tradition between the two of us. I take both kids to bed with me and he stays up wrapping my Christmas presents.
