A year and a half ago, I shared how I organized the home office files for my family. It has been an extremely popular post and I liked the way it was organized, until it stopped working for us.
So, why did it stop working?
Well, Derrick got older and he needed file folders just for him. We moved and some of our utilities changed. And, I didn’t account for any of my blog files. They were actually contained in a separate container.
Fast forward to today and this is what it ended up looking like…
Yep! You are seeing the picture correctly. We moved out of the clear plastic container with the lid and slowly into 3 separate desktop files. I have no idea how it happened either!!!
So, for Christmas, I asked my mom to purchase me a filing cabinet. But, not any filing cabinet… A PINK one! If I was going to be the one using it, then I wanted a girly one. With a little laughter (yes, my mom thinks I am a little crazy to want organizing things for Christmas), she agreed.
And, this is the filing cabinet I picked out and she purchased for me…
It is the TPS Pink 3-Drawer Filing Cabinet from CB2. Unfortunately, they are sold out of this color online, but they have many other choices available. The pink was on sale for $99.00 before Christmas.
So far, I am loving it. It has rollers, so it is easy to move around. And, the drawers slide very well. Thumbs up from me!
My goal was to move the files from the three desktop files into this filing cabinet. Step 1 was to do some major cleaning out and shredding.
After getting everything reorganized, I placed the extra file folders in the two mesh desktop file containers and placed them in our extra closet in the office/playroom.
And, now, our office files are organized again and contained in one area.
The top drawer holds my washi tape (I got the idea from Jen at iheart organizing), my large set of Staedtler pens, extra small notepads, and a container of thumbtacks (in container with red lid).
The Middle Drawer
The middle drawer holds my punches, page flags, and a few extra planner accessories. I am still in the process of filling up this drawer and making it useful.
The Bottom Drawer
The bottom drawer is the actual file spot. It holds all of the files for my household and blog. Just like the previous file container, I color-coded our files. I actually used the same file folders from the previous one. There wasn’t anything wrong with them, so I didn’t want to waste money on new ones when these were perfectly fine.
Yellow – Kids
Green – Nathan
Red – Kristin
Blue – Family
Pink – Blog
In my first file container post, the kids shared folders. Now, I made each child a folder. For example, Derrick has a dental folder and so does Kate.
Nathan has certain bills that I do not have and vice versa, so those bills get placed in specific folders under his name, or mine. For example, each one of us has a credit card for emergencies that is only in our name. So, they get placed in our section and not in the family area. Each personal section of folders contains:
- credit cards
- student loans
And, here is a glimpse of mine…
And, the family section…
This is the section that changed the most. We paid off some things and changed companies on several, so the folders had to be adjusted.
My blog section is done a little bit differently. Instead of the black hanging folders, I used hot pink to make them stand out. Then, each folder has a colorful design. I purchased the hanging files from Wal-Mart and the actual folders from Target several years ago.
Once the files were organized and placed in the new filing cabinet, I updated my Home binder (see post). I had to take out the old house details (loan papers, insurance documents, etc.) and place the new home purchase papers inside.
All of the documents from 2014 went into this clear container that I labeled and will store in the attic for approximately 6 years.
And, I get to mark another item off of my 2015 list of goals. YAY!!!
