Welcome to my blog! My name is Kristin and I am a middle school business/technology teacher by day and a mommy/wife/blogger by night. I married my high school sweetheart in July 2007, and we had a beautiful daughter (Kate) in March 2009 and a handsome son (Derrick) in February 2013. My husband & I just recently moved out of our hometown, so we are still adjusting to a new home and jobs. We work for the same school district and he is also one of the assistant football coaches at the high school. For all those wives of coaches out there, I bow to you! It’s definitely not a job that is made for everyone. My husband spends a lot of hours away from home (even during the off-season) planning, preparing, organizing, and conditioning his players for that 48 minutes on Friday nights! I try to attend every game and support him 100%, but I realized that I spend all of my time devoted to him and my children. I had nothing that I could call “my own.” So, I decided it was time to change that.
Let me start by saying I have been a planner girl before I even knew what the term meant. I remember carrying around a notebook that I made into a planner in middle school. I wrote all of my class assignments and important notes in that little notebook and I was pretty stinkin’ proud of it. And, that love continued through high school, college, and beyond.
I went to college at Ole Miss and graduated in the year 2005 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing. I went on to work for a year and a half at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee as a fulfillment coordinator. Basically, my team and I were in charge of getting all of the fundraising packets, prizes, and letters out to prospective schools and community organizations. After a lot of thought, I decided to quit that job and go back to school to get my teaching certificate. Why? Because I wanted to make a known impact on the lives of others. I wanted more of a connection. I received my teaching certificate in business and marketing education in 2010 and went on to get my Master’s degree in Educational Technology in 2013. I have been a business/technology teacher since 2007.
That girl that graduated in 2005 and went on to accomplish her educational goals, still didn’t meet the internal goal that she unknowingly set for herself. I remember writing my last paper during my final semester for my College Writing class. We could write about anything descriptive and present it. My paper was about how my closet was organized. I wrote how the clothes in my closet hung all facing one way, color-coded, and by type. I was super proud of that paper and internally wished I could make a career out of being an organizer. My passion is organizing and planning, but I had to put that on the backburner to become an “adult” and pay my bills.
That passion never left. I had been teaching from 2007-2011 and still wasn’t filling that internal void. I felt like I had so much creativity to share and no one to share it with. So, on a whim, I decided to start a blog in May of 2011 to share my passion for organizing, planning, and decorating. What started out as a crazy idea in 2011 has turned into my passion and is slowing turning into a business. Now, I have a YouTube channel and I am pretty enthusiastic about my Instagram account as well.
So, where did I get the name, The Gold Project? Through trial and error with two other names, I knew this name was the one. In my classes, I do a fun getting-to-know you personality test lesson called True Colors at the beginning of every year. After taking the simple test, it places you in one of four personality groups: blue, green, gold, or orange. I have a strong Gold personality. People who are characterized as Gold need to be responsible, to fulfill duties and obligations, and to organize and structure their lives. They represent stability, maintenance of the culture and the organization, efficiency, and dependability. They embrace the concepts of home and family with strong loyalty and faithfulness. And, that pretty much sums me up!
It is also a play on words. Gold is also the combination of the first letters of the topics that I cover: Gifting, Organizing, Living, and Decorating. I added the “project” part to my name because I consider each post a “project” whether it is a personal one or an actual one. I consider myself a project. I am always attempting to make myself a better person and increase my knowledge in all areas of life.
It took me 32 years to find my passion and niche in life, but life is about the journey.
