I wrote a post similar to this one at the beginning of 2012, but I decided to write a new one because I have gotten a lot of new followers since then. I will also post it in a tab at the top of the blog titled “About the Blog.”
I wanted to explain the meaning behind the name “The O.C.D. Life.” I received a comment over the past week that really didn’t sit well with me. The individual felt that I was making light of a serious condition; obsessive compulsive disorder. They had even visited my “About Me” section. After revisiting it myself, I noticed that nowhere in the description of myself do I talk about my issues or how I named this blog. So, I was happy that I received the comment because it told me that I hadn’t explained that information very well. So, here it goes…
I started this blog in May 2011 under the name Kristin’s Notebook.
I started this blog with no goals in mind. I was just trying to find something to do with my “extra” time while my husband was coaching. At that time, he was coaching football, baseball, and supervising weight lifting at our high school. The first 9 or 10 months, I blogged about everything from organizing to entertainment and celebrities. Honestly, I didn’t think anyone would read it. But, I did start getting a few followers.
After about 10 months, I decided my blog needed a focus. I wanted one area that I could put all of my efforts into and make my blog a lot better with richer content. I noticed that when I posted about organizing, I had a lot more page views and feedback. So, that became my focus with a little decorating and creating thrown in. I was pretty excited too because organizing has always been a passion of mine.
Honestly, the creating aspect of the name is a nice way for me to be able to add some extra things about myself among other things and still stay within the central idea of the blog.
Once I determined a focused, it was time to rename my blog. After thinking, thinking, and thinking some more, I decided to go with the first letter of all the words I wanted to focus on, which gave me OCD. Now, here is where it becomes real…
The name is actually a play-on-words for me. When I threw together the first letters of organizing, creating, and decorating and it gave me OCD, I had a light bulb moment. Keep in mind, the name HAD to fit me. I wouldn’t be responsible for content and a title that didn’t truly scream “Kristin.” The reason why this name was so fitting is because I have OCD myself. It is undiagnosed, but it is still there. How, you might ask?
A few examples…
For starters, since I was a little girl, I have had an issue with checking and rechecking things. As a teenager and college student, it was door knobs and making sure they were locked. Now, it is door knobs, fans, electrical outlets, blow dryers, flat irons, coffee pots, and the list goes on. I have this fear that I am going to be at work and get a phone call about my house being on fire or someone breaking in. Even though I know the flat iron is off, I must check it several times before leaving.
Next, I am OCD about numbers. There are certain numbers that I do not like. For instance, the number 13. My son was born this year (2013) and it really made me uneasy. I really wanted to have a baby in 2014, but I didn’t want to wait another year. So, I bit the bullet and pushed away my uneasiness. Next, anytime I see numbers, I try to divide them or determine if they have any type of relationship. If they do, it makes me like the numbers more. For example, if I am looking at my clock and see 11:22, I have this inner happiness because 11 goes into 22. I know, it is crazy, but I have gotten used to it. And, one other thing… I count a lot in my head.
Next, I am pretty OCD about germs. I must use germ-x anytime I go to a restaurant, store, bathroom, etc. I am scared if I don’t take extra precautions, then I will get sick. I know everyone gets sick, but my brain has an issue with it. LOL!!!
Please, don’t think that I am crazy, insane, or really mentally unstable. I live a normal life, but I do have my quirks just like everyone else.
Once I got the theme and the name, it was time to get a header. Let me add that the heading has changed MANY times since the beginning and will continue to change.
And, it now looks like this…
I am sure you will see many more headings in the future, but at the moment, I love the last one.
I hope this has given everyone a better understanding of the meaning behind my blog name. Feel free to contact me with any further questions, suggestions, or ideas.
